msiexec fixed
For some freak reason, my windows 64 machine could not install any programs lately. Couldn’t figure how it happened, but my hunch is that the friendly startup program, chkdsk, fixed the file system after my battery ran out one night, causing the system to lose power and the contents in the memory. After googling the error message a bit I think msiexec was corrupt. Problem is I don’t have my windows 7 disk with me on this trip and I didn’t want to do a full reinstall either. So after some brainstorming, I downloaded a windows 7 64 edition from the internet, installed it inside a virtual machine, and copied the msiexec from the VM to my harddrive. It wasn’t as easy as that. First, I tried doing it in safe mode but that already locked the file somehow. So then I had to copy the windows 7 iso onto a USB key and went into the recovery command prompt. There I was able to copy the 32-bit version of the msiexec executable onto my machine. And, what do you know? Things install now! There are also another pesky problem that iTunes is complaining that some registry key is missing and I must reinstall iTunes. Oh yeah, and after my struggles with other music organization library I decided to go back to iTunes.
